Top tips for renting a car in Tuscany

  • When driving in Tuscany, you will want to make sure that you know Italy’s car seat laws. If a child is under the age of 12, they must always sit in the back of the vehicle and be in a proper booster seat. The only exception is if a child is 1.5 meters (approximately 4 feet, 9 inches). In this circumstance, they do not need to be in a child seat if they are under the age of 12. The specific type of booster seat that you will need to use will vary on the height and age of the child.
  • If you see a road that is marked as an “autostrade”, this means that it is a toll road. These roads are typically labeled with an “A” at the beginning, followed by a number. While you will not find these everywhere in Tuscany, they are still present and commonly used. The A1 (Autostrada del Sole) is the most commonly used toll road in the region, and it goes from Bologna through northern Tuscany, continues on to Florence, and eventually heads to Arezzo and Cortona before continuing on to Rome.
  • Drivers will find that there are fewer speed limit signs in Tuscany than there are in most regions of the United States. Because of this, it is important that you are familiar with local speed limits in order to avoid receiving a ticket or fine. When driving in a town, the maximum speed limit is 50 kmh (31 mph). On secondary roads, the speed limit is often between 70 kmh (44 mph) and 90 kmh (56 mph).
  • In Tuscany, there are four distinctive types of road signs. If you see a road sign that is blue, which are usually found on main roads, this means that it will indicate which direction you need to go in, i.e. if you are required to turn right, etc. If you see a road sign that is green, this indicates that the road is an autostrade, or toll road. If you see a road sign that has a capital white “P” on a blue background, this indicates a parking area. Finally, if you see a road sign that has a red line going through a blue circle, this indicates a no parking zone.
