FAQs - booking Scotland flights

  • Do Canadian citizens need a visa to go to Scotland?

Canadian citizens are not required to have a visa in order to travel to Scotland, as long as they will remain in the country for 90 days or less. Keep in mind that if you intend on working or studying while in Scotland, you will need to receive a valid visa in order to do so.

  • How can I go from Edinburgh Airport (EDI) to the city centre?

Once you have landed at Edinburgh Airport, it is likely that you will want to travel to the city centre. An easy way to do this is by car, whether it’s a local taxi or renting your own vehicle, and the trip will typically take around 30 minutes. If you take public transportation, like bus lines 100Airlink or X38, you will get to the city centre in approximately 40 minutes.

  • Can I book a direct flight to Scotland?

It is possible to book a direct flight to Scotland, however of all the airports providing flights to the country, Toronto Pearson International Airport is the only one offering nonstop service to Glasgow via Air Transat. If you are departing from another part of the country, you will either have to travel by vehicle or train once you arrive, or book a connecting flight.

  • Which airport is closest to the Orkney islands?

This group of about 70 islands marks the northern boundary of Scotland and includes the famous Scapa Flow Bay. Aberdeen Airport is the closest travel hub to this remote region, and if you prefer not to spend about 10h driving, you can board a connecting flight via Logan Air into Kirkwall Airport (KOI), which takes about 1h.

  • If I wish to visit Bannockburn, which airport should I fly into?

The historic Bannockburn field and the surrounding landmarks of Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument all lie north of Glasgow and Edinburgh. A flight into Glasgow Airport will leave you 33 km away, while Bannockburn is about 58 km from Edinburgh Airport, so it is advised that you fly into Glasgow if you intend to visit these famous attractions.

  • Where should I fly in order to see Loch Ness?

Perhaps the most iconic of all Scottish attractions, Loch Ness is relatively close to two other very popular tourist destinations, Inverness Castle and Culloden Battlefield. A flight into any of Scotland’s airports will leave you within 150 km of the lake, however if you choose to fly into Aberdeen Airport, you’ll be just 119 km away. This is just less than Edinburgh Airport, which is about 121 km away.

  • How does KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travellers know whether to wait or book now.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Scotland

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Scotland flight deals.
  • While non-stop flights from Canada to Scotland are not offered, there are quite a few flights that will only require you to have one layover before ending up at your final destination. For example, if you are departing from Vancouver International Airport (YVR), you can go to both Edinburgh Airport (EDI) and Glasgow Airport (GLA) with just one layover.
  • If you will be visiting Stirling Castle, you will first need to fly into Edinburgh Airport. Once you are well arrived at EDI, you can then go to your destination by car, which will take you around 40 minutes in total depending on weather and traffic. You can also take public transport, a journey that will take around 1 hour.
  • Those that will be going to Drumlanrig Castle & Gardens will want to fly into Glasgow Prestwick Airport (PIK). After you have landed at PIK, you can drive to the castle, which will take you around 1h 15min in total. If you take public transportation, the journey will be just under 3 hours.
  • Air Canada, Aer Lingus and British Airways are three carriers that operate flights to Scotland’s various airports, including Aberdeen International Airport (ABZ) in the east of the country. The other two airports, Glasgow International Airport (GLA) and Edinburgh Turnhouse Airport (EDI), are in the more densely populated southern half of the country and receive the majority of the air traffic into Scotland.
  • You can choose a flight from either Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) or Vancouver International Airport (YVR) when flying into Aberdeen. Aer Lingus has flights from Toronto, however these flights require a layover at Dublin Airport (DUB), while British Airways flights from Vancouver International Airport require a layover at London Heathrow Airport (LHR).
  • The attractions of Rosslyn Chapel, Dunfermline and St. Andrews are all close to Scotland’s capital city of Edinburgh. When booking your flight to Scotland’s capital, you can fly with Aer Lingus from Toronto Pearson International Airport with a stop at Dublin Airport (DUB), or you can choose a United Airlines flight stopping at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD).
  • Glasgow International Airport services the southeastern region of Scotland, including the towns of Motherwell, Kilmarnock and the famous Mull of Kintyre. Virgin Atlantic operates flights to Glasgow from Calgary Airport (YYC) via Frankfurt (FRA), while Delta has flights to Glasgow from Montreal Trudeau Airport (YUL) via New York (JFK).
  • The Isle of Skye and the Isle of Lewis are two large islands off the western coast of mainland Scotland and are geographically closest to Glasgow Airport. From Glasgow Airport you can get a local flight with Logan Air to Isle of Lewis Airport (SYY), and then take the ferry to the Isle of Skye.

Overall, very uneventful and pleasant experience. Most importantly, no delays.

Not very comfortable seated in the back plane due to turbulence

We were seated at the back and that was very uncomfortable for me with the turbulence we experienced on our way to Chicago.

Everything about Korean air is great, hands down! Will always prefer this airline from other carriers.

Korean Air had great service and the Bibimbap dish was the best airplane food I’ve ever had. It was a long flight so in between the two meals they served customers could get Shin ramen. The flight attendants let my children use a pair of nice headphones for the flight and had earbuds and slippers for all the adults. The flight was long but the time passed by relatively quickly because they have many great shows in their entertainment TV. I watched the BTS Love Yourself and Speak Yourself concerts 💜

It was ok. Not good and not a bad experience

not too bad but not too great either. Service on all airlines declined ever since covid. Your Delta Stewardess are not that friendly at all. :-(

Stewardess are nice. Food could have been better and should have a better dessert. They do not offer scotch or beer. You have to ask for it. I also was not happy that you do not serve ginger ale and or cranberry juice. This is my first time that an international flight do not have this. I go home overseas every year and when I travel through ANA, Delta, Qatar, JAL, Asiana Air, United Air. they all serve this two very famous drink. You do not have a great snack tray.

Going through security a second time to get on the next Korean Air flight was utterly ridiculous and unnecessary. We were in a International secure area.

The website is difficult if you don't have an account and sign in as a guest. Seat selection/change is only allowed after they send you an email which I would never received. Otherwise, the Korean Air flight crew was great. Just go to back of plane for snacks and drinks. They provide pillow, blanket and headphones. Movie selection wasn't great imo.

Their announcement was not quite clear in Chinese. The rest is pretty good.

Flight was smooth no complaint. Except maybe better food choice for the long flight…

Great experience for a long 13-14 hours flight. Great pilot and crew, everyone is pleasant and attentive to the passengers.

The type of the food requested (Asian vegetarian) was not properly met with. They have very limited snack items that may compensate for the main meals.

A wonderful new plane. Great menu. Professional service. You and your wife were completely satisfied.

Eva Air's Business Class is pretty decent. With the given price, I think that the food can be better.

Seats could have been more comfortable, but it was a pretty good experience all things considered

Boarding is fast and easy for economy class, food was ok baggage policies are good

I hope their usb charging port works. None of their usb port is working. Boeing 777 LA to Taipei (vs)

The flight went well. Everything good. Boarding. Meal service. Snack (crackers) & Drinks. (Could do with more selection like a sandwich). The seats did not have the annoying footrests (that dig into your shins when you stretch out your legs.). Entertainment was good as I watch 4 movies. Screens were bight (adjustable) but could do with privacy filters on them to prevent light from the passenger next to you shining in your face. They need to have milk for hot black tea though as coffee creamer just never makes tea taste nice.

The Priority check in in Toronto rivalled the poorest I've experienced. The young woman at the desk (7:30 AM, YYZ) was unfriendly and abrupt, behaving as though we were interrupting her day. Her inch long fingernails said it all....I really don't belong here. Other than that, WestJet personnel provided a good travel experience, especially in flight. I must say that the repeated announcements about the cabin being full and how folks should gate check their bags became tedious. WestJet should just offer free checked luggage and charge for carry on suitcases. It would save a lot of time and the voices of the gate agents.

It was fine. I had a lot of trouble trying to buy a seat. The Westjet website charged me and then didn’t give me my seat. I ended up keeping the seat I was assigned and hope that the charges didn’t go through.. they didn’t. But this problem with the website (trying to purchase a seat at check in) has happened a few times before. But overall the flight was good.

The back seats are crowded and at times uncomfortable. I guess that’s part of the price of paying less for a seat.

It was okay overall, but it was a 4 hours flight and the only thing we got was snacks, I really expected breakfast.

Terrible! Delayed three times, landed at some corner of airport, walked in bitter cold night, took a bus, bad experience

My wife and I had an uncomfortable experience with your WestJet ticket counter rep at the WestJet Priority Member ticket counter at YYC (Calgary) on May 15, 2024. I not knowing this individual’s exact name, however, in order to easily identify her, she was one (of only two at the time) ticket counter reps at your Priority members ticket counter check-in, upon our arrival around 12:15 p.m. She was a Caucasian woman with blonde hair, and wore spectacles, approximate age being probably somewhere in her 30’s or 40’s. Background: After arriving in to the West Jet terminal in Calgary (YYC), I asked a terminal employee where the West Jet check-in ticket counter was. He told me, “Column 16”. My wife and I continuing to walk through the terminal, we finally arrived at the Column 16 area, i.e. this woman’s ticket counter area, which we discovered later was the Priority Member ticket counter. However, I was simply going by the directions given to me by the previous employee, i.e. “Walk to column 16.” Standing in her line (my wife and I being the only people in her line at the time), I tried to get her attention, and I then gestured to her, motioning to her as if to ask her if I should then possibly leave the waiting line in order to then proceed to walk up to her ticket counter. She never really motioned me to come forward. I sort of had to figure this out on my own, as my wife and I then finally decided to walk forward to her station. From this point on, after I arrived at her ticket counter, never once did she ever look me in the eye. She was always looking at her computer screen, or down at the ground, as she and I occasionally exchanged conversation with one another in order for me to be able to acquire my boarding passes from her. Shortly after she began servicing us, she commented that her work section is for Priority members only. Fair enough. I did not realize this at the time. Wishing to be polite, I then mentioned to her that, if I should, I could then walk over to the regular West Jet check-in ticket counter in order to complete the check-in process. She remained quiet, never responding to this goodwill gesture of mine. She continued to work in order to print out my boarding passes, and then finally handed them to me, never at all the entire time looking at me. I told her, “Thank you.” Never once did she respond. My wife and I then walked away. Even my wife commented to me afterward that this woman absolutely never looked at us. I cannot say that this attendant was outright rude. However, she certainly was not at all warm, congenial, nor friendly. Additionally, … After getting on the plane, we then discovered that she had needlessly assigned us seats in the very last row of the plane, these being the seats adjacent to the restroom back wall, thus, unfortunately not at all reclinable. I think that the row number of this last row of seats was 30. [However, I am not sure.] How strangely awkward that we were assigned these uncomfortable row of seats when in fact the row immediately ahead of us, i.e. I think that was row 29, had two vacancies, which could have otherwise easily seated my wife and me. That is, my wife and I could have easily been assigned these more comfortable seats, which would be reclinable, and then row 30 could have otherwise had instead our two vacancies. After our flight departed, and the fasten seatbelt sign was turned off, my wife and I had hoped to “jump seats”, that is, to leave row 30 and instead sit in row 29 to utilize the reclinable seats. However, another couple apparently had the same idea as us. That is, these other two people, for whatever reason, decided to leave their previously assigned seats, and instead, seat themselves in row 29. Thus, my wife and I were stuck with these miserably cramped row 30 seats for the entire 3.5 hour flight. To reiterate, the WestJet rep we originally encountered, knowledgeable of the plane lay-out as it appeared on her computer screen, could have easily assigned us the more comfortable row 29 seats, instead of the non-reclinable row 30 seats.

Keep better track of bags. Not sure how they got lost. Also not sure why it took two weeks for us to get them back. Had to buy a bunch of necessities because they were packed.

It was very, very cold extremely uncomfortable almost unbearable I was sitting at the front of the cabin

Our trip was booked to be 2 hours after arriving in Calgary but it was changed until the next morning forcing us to stay overnight in Calgary with no compensation

Was the longest flight I have ever taken to Orlando. Not Westjet’s fault necessarily. There was a traffic issue in Orlando. We sat in the airplane for about 2 hrs before leaving Calgary on a 5 hour flight was just a little long to be stuck in the plane. Once we arrived in Orlando we were stuck in traffic on the ground for another 30min. I guess maybe the flight could be delayed so boarding would have been later so we wouldn’t have to have the discomfort of being on the plane so long.

We liked the fully reclinable seats. Had center seats, so it was difficult to talk to spouse. Crew was great

Marked by flight delays on all segments of the trip. Food in first class cabin was mediocre and overhead cabin storage was not adequate. Overall, the premium charge for first class cabin was poor and over hyped. This will be our last flight with UA.

We enjoyed that we boarded and took off on time. We didn’t like that our connection flight was a twenty minute walk through the airport with only one hour in between flights.

It was good! Appreciated that it was very on schedule so it made the connecting flight less stressful

Two flights, both poor. No entertainment. Cramped and uncomfortable seats, little space, the rest was OK. Staff were acceptable good.

The crew was doing their best on an old plane needing updating. Chairs that creaked and wouldn’t stay in position. My tray table was unusable as was on-board entertainment due the audio needing usb earphones (that were not provided). Prior to boarding in Toronto and despite being scheduled for a wheelchair and assistance, we were dropped off by clubcar without a wheelchair which I found myself by a gate. Due to no boarding gate assigned at that time we waited and when it was, it subsequently was moved from 64 to 95. No help could be found so I pushed my husband’s chair to that furthest gate in the airport at the highest speed possible for a 73 year old. And by that I mean I ran. It was a very stressful experience.

Wifi wasn't working on one of the UA flights after boarding.

Leg room was lacking. Legs crammed into seat in front.

T hey did a great job. Flight was on time .

the plane was old. the wifi didn’t work. the entertainment was boring and dated. the charging ports were impossible to find. i was mostly ignored by flight attendants that had no problem speaking to the man beside me. i got two drinks the entire time i was on the plane.

Air Canada had a lot of delays on our flight going back to Seattle. So much inconvenience for a long trip.

Very poor. Flight was cancelled last minute to deploy the plane for another route

Moderate size plane, not completely full, easy boarding, some rows with just 2 seats so a couple can have a row to themselves

The flight was actually good the staff was all friendly, but I have to give it a bad rating because my luggage was damaged and I was not able to claim that it was damaged. I only realized it once I got to my hotel and when I tried to contact Air Canada it was almost impossible. The number give to make claims is only for US & Canada yet I was in Seoul, when I tried contacting the number for Seoul I was once again told to call the other number or to return to the airport (which was not possible at the moment). So very disappointed that there was no way to claim my damaged bag and now I have to try to get a new bag while on vacation.

The Carry-on luggage that approved by TSA and all other airlines,- always an issue with Air Canada. This is inappropriate as my carry on suitcase meets the requirements however it always asked to check in on AC flight on the gate. Yes I have it for free, but it takes extra time to pick up on the carousel. Apparently it fit the overhead space, so why AC has this issue all the time?

Mess up with not assigning my husband a seat when our two tickets were purchased at the same time. They put us on standby. We were almost bumped off the plane at the gate before departure. Luckily someone volunteered to get a later flight.

Prepaid for my seat selection over a month in advance only to be told when I arrive at the airport that the plane has changed and no pre-selected seats would be honored and refunds would not be issued immediately. Was forced to separate from my traveling companion Air Canada. Unsurprisingly was no assistance in this whatsoever. Plane. We got switched on to also has no entertainment options available

The flight was excellent the problem was that my luggage was damaged (zipper pulls ripped out) and it is difficult to contact the number to claim the damage while in another country and going back to the airport is not an option and no matter what I tried I got the same response to just call the number that is not possible for me to call in the first place. So very disappointed that I can’t claim such damage and that now I have to take part of my trip looking for a new luggage.

The flight itself was ok the staff was great and so was the inflight food. The biggest problem was that my luggage was damaged (the zipper pull from both sides of the zipper where completely ripped out) and I didn’t notice at the airport but at the hotel and when I tried to make a claim it was not possible for me because I have to either call (which is difficult because I’m in another country) I tried to call every nombre given to me but the one that I need I was never able to contact and going back to the airport was not an option. So it’s basically impossible to make a claim if you are abroad. Very disappointed that there are no other ways to claim a damaged bag and now I need to buy a new luggage while on my trip.

Too many notifications. Non of which were useful. 4 hours before traveling we discovered that we needed a transit visa. That's useful information. Air Canada should flag and keep flagging that up. Then the useless too much information had us go to Paris not Brussels. Chaos involving the customer. We will try never to use AC again.
