FAQs - booking Costa Rica flights

  • Do I need a visa to travel to Costa Rica?

Canadian passport holders do not need to apply for a visa for stays of up to 90 days. However, your passport should be valid for at least a month beyond your date of departure from Costa Rica and you might need to provide proof of onward or return travel in the form of an airline ticket or equivalent.

  • Are there direct flights to Costa Rica?

Air Canada Rouge offers non-stop flights from Toronto Pearson International Airport and Montreal Airport to San Jose International Airport, Costa Rica's biggest international airport servicing the capital, San Jose. WestJet offers a direct connection between Toronto and San Jose. Both airlines also fly non-stop to Costa Rica's second international airport in Guanacaste, Liberia International Airport.

  • Where should I fly to in Costa Rica?

When booking your flights to Costa Rica, you have the choice between two international airports. San Jose Airport is your best option if you are heading to the southern part of Costa Rica, including the Caribbean or central Pacific regions. Liberia Airport is the perfect starting point if you want to visit the northern part of Costa Rica. If you are catching a domestic flight after your arrival in Costa Rica, San Jose International Airport might be the best choice as it is the hub for domestic airlines such as Sansa Airlines, and connects to additional destinations within the country.

  • I want to visit the best beaches in Costa Rica. Where should I fly to?

The region of Guanacaste, located in the northwestern part of Costa Rica, boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the country including Tamarindo, Samara and Flamingo. If you want to visit one of these beaches, your best option is to fly into Liberia International Airport. You can either rent a car at the airport or use one of the many shuttle busses to get to the surrounding beaches. If you take a shuttle bus, the transfer to Tamarindo or Flamingo beach takes approximately 2h, and the trip to Samara beach takes approximately 2h 30min.

  • What recommendations for kid seat safety should be considered when renting a car in Costa Rica?

If you plan to rent a car for movement flexibility from the airport to your destinations, please be aware that child seat safety regulations are followed in Costa Rica. Your children under 12 years will be given a child safety seat appropriate for their size. Rear-facing seats are available for infants under the age of 15 months, forward-facing seats are available for children between the ages of 15 months and 4 years, and booster or booster cushion seats are available for children between the ages of 4 and 12 years.

  • How do I connect from San José International Airport (SJC) to Downtown San Jose?

San Jose International Airport and Downtown are not directly connected. You can take route 60 bus that will take you to 1st Metro station, and walk to the Airport/metro Station. At the airport station, you will take a tram to your final destination downtown. You can also take a taxi to downtown San Jose in about 10 minutes.

Over the wing seat at emergency exit only downside people using lavatory have no respect and wait in the space

Flight delayed any hour and couple of big gate changes

The pilot came out and chatted with the passengers. He explained why there was a slight delay. The crew was excellent. Very helpful. I had to buy meals for my whole family and they were in different seats, so the crew had to deal with that. They were very pleasant and accommodating and did a great job!

We were unable to land in Liberia. It was not the airline’s fault, but we had to be diverted to SJO.

We had things stolen from our luggage, we also were refused an upgrade on a flight that was not full.

When we left, it wasn't Great . People were drinking heavily, very disrespectful Extremely loud, the entire trip. I think the crew members, should have get their attention. Coming back was great.

I sat in the club. The seeds were fantastic. The meal was great and Entertainment was good. The crew was fantastic. I recommend it to everybody.

The food was small portions and not fresh. I was seated at the back of the plane so by the time the cart approached me most of the food options were sold out. The cabin crew was fantastic however.

Great flight and crew. Food isn't free and neither are headphones...

We were in economy class but paid for option Plus which offer you an extra snack after take off, free earplugs & blanket. The crew were very attentive. The comfort however wasn’t great, hard to be comfortable in such restraint place. Wasn’t able to sleep through out the 7hrs flight and was exhausted upon arrival.

Plane 3 hours late. Missed connection. No help from gate staff. App horrible. Lost connection repeatedly. No service desk. Finally got help from young girl driving cart.

Not as good as expected Air Can needs to improve totally rated on internet as worst

The flight was delayed, it took longer than anticipated because of weather, and they broke my luggage.

Everything was good. Flight was on time, luggage pickup was quick. The staff were great. Could not ask for anything more.

lots of delays the crew were unclear about where to pick up my carry-on, which they took from me to check in on the plane.

They needed people to check a bag, they did check my bag and I had to wait 10 minutes after the flight to get it it wasn’t too bad

HORRIBLE WITH THEIR WEBSITE!!! WORST WEBSITE IN THE WHOLE AIRLINE INDUSTRY

It was 4 hours late. Almost missed my connecting flight no food or drinks on connecting flight. Overall terrible experience

Cramped seats. Audio jack for the in -flight entertainment was broken.

United airlines was top for my last trip in every way

Flight cancelled and Kayak switched our return flight to a red eye. Ridiculous.

Will never book through you again. Very disappointed in the notices and action taken or provided when planes are rescheduled, enough to cause missed connections

Lost my luggage. Filed a report and there is no response. Received a phone call from another airline that said they had the bag and they did not know what to do with it

They delayed flight because lack of staff then missed connection. Never flying with kayak or weather

Very good over all , would have been nice to have entertainment on the flight

Experience was good. Was surprised they didn’t offer a complimentary meal on a 5 hour flight.

Too squished in seats. I'm 110 lbs and 5'6....can't imagine being any bigger and flying

The flight attendants were great, but not much room while sitting and it would be nice to get free movies.

Absolutely the worst airline I have ever taken. They lost my baggage and told me my bag tags had been cancelled. When my bags arrived days later I had to pick them up at 3:15 am. My return flight was delayed another 6 hours and they broke my bag. Westjet does nothing to try and make it a better customer experience and all the customers services representatives I spoke with were useless and incompetent. Never flying westjet again.

Easy self checkin and baggage drop. No in seat entertainment, but wifi and app worked well

Experience was awful and I’ll never fly AirCanada again. 4 canceled flights. Impossible wait times to speak to a customer service rep (over 4 hours for them to tell us to take a train which were all booked). Rude staff. Constant and consistent lack of communication. 0/10.

Very Poor Even with the disruptions our flight was delayed twice then eventually cancelled. Subsequently we to this date have lost 3 days of our vacation. The situation still remains unresolved

Flight was delayed 24 hours, then delayed again first was mechanical and second was weather.

My flight was cancelled and I was left to figure out where to find a hotel, something to eat and how to get a new flight at 11:30pm. Wasted a day. Thanks, Air Canada!

Very nice Crew! Not much entertainment, but it was only a short flight, so it is okay for this flight.

flight was delayed 6 hours for weather, then cancelled because of the crash in toronto, but none of the links to cancel or rebook my flights are working

Air Canada cancelled my flight without issuing a refund. I could not make this flight. Air Canada does not accept phone calls Aircanada.com is down.

Air Canada cancelled my flight and did not issue a refund. Air Canada does not accept phone calls to their customer service line 888.247.2262 for rebooking. Aircanada.com is down.

Efficient board despite a 100% sold out flight. It’s crowded on the plane but crew was working hard to get us off the ground on time and served dinner and breakfast. Food was good.

They kept changing the gate (6 times in 30 minutes) and then left us on the plane for 4 hours before departure. Likely was the storm, which is understandable, but the lack of communication and the e constant running between gates at opposite ends of the airport really threw me and my friend for a loop.

The seats were very uncomfortable. I would have upgrade or got different flight if I knew. I usually sleep in the plane but I couldn’t sleep at all. Very uncomfortable. Also no food or drink everything was to purchase, and that’s u usual for international flight.

We did not know about the bag fees until check in. They are way too high. It’s insane. We also had a huge delay and everything costed extra which was very annoying.

Lounge for business was closed. Boarding was rush and stand by. Seat for business is just the middle seat blocked and some more leg room.

We were not aware carry-on bags cost extra until we arrived at the airport so, we were charged $240.00 for two small carry- on bags! There was a substantial fee for drinks and snacks. No wifi, or other entertainment was available. Waiting areas were crowded and uncomfortable.

So so, you feel like you have to pay for everything each time

please see previous response; it covers the whole travel trajectory.

I enjoyed it! In that case, I should have been offered this choice. On my first trip to Miami, I was asked to pay $320 for my luggage just for getting it totally broken. I cannot accept this situation at all!!!!

Be very careful of the initial low price because Avianca wil bill you for a carryon of $120 or a checked bag for $120. Also, be careful with connections because the customs entry process is slow and the connecting terminal is not close.

My whole return flight itinerary, 3 flights, got canceled without any warning to me because I missed one of the earlier flights 3 weeks ago

Worst airline , charge for everything even for water, seat space is very bad
