I wish I had anticipated the delay at the airport and scheduled my ride pickup for 1.5 hours after the estimated arrival time. I was unaware that passengers from Air Canada flights had to board a shuttle bus to access the aircraft.

Get on a regional sized (smaller than Boeing 737 or Airbus A320) jet if you can, they are older and have more legroom than newer aircraft.

I would fly Delta Airlines. Never Air Canada again.

Be prepared for a labyrinthine experience traversing the various levels and passages of the Toronto airport. Bring quality walking shoes, as it is likely well over a km in total walking time.

I wish we had know about the security check and customs. It was a long distance between gates. It all worked out fine though. I forgot to add that the overhead compartments were built poorly. At least for someone my height and head size.
Verified travelerFlew with Air CanadaYYZ-MIANov 2024
Go direct ! That was fabulous. A/C was good but one flight attendant was kind of miserable. Don't know her name. Michael was good tho/
Verified travelerFlew with United AirlinesYYZ-LAXOct 2024
Make sure you know which terminal to head to upon landing if transferring at Los Angeles as the information board at LAX will show only flight info for the terminal you are at (1 of 8). Transfer information is not transparent from the airline or the airport. Subscribe to airline apps help but can be cumbersome and difficult to manage in a time crunch.
JoanFlew with Porter AirlinesYYZ-SFONov 2024
Maybe get the choice above the cheapest option because you don't get a checked bag or carry on so in the end you end up paying about the same, if not more.
Verified travelerFlew with DeltaYYZ-ATLJul 2024
Delta is great because when you land, you are already on the domestic side of the airport. Since I take the train/subway downtown, way cheaper than a taxi or Uber, I do not have to take a shuttle all the way around the airport to the subway: I just take a quick link train and walk a short distance. Easy and fast! Like travel should be.
Verified travelerFlew with Air CanadaYYZ-LAXAug 2024
It is great to have a nonstop flight. Might be worth paying a bit extra for it.

Avoid Air Canada Rouge. Better to book with Delta.
Verified travelerFlew with Air CanadaYYZ-DCAJun 2024
The flight is less than two hours, so even though the plane is uncomfortable and crammed full, try to think happy thoughts like, "I'll be off this sardine can soon."
Verified travelerFlew with Air CanadaYYZ-IADAug 2024
Check the departure board carefully when you get to the airport.

After a great experience with Air Canada from Barcelona to Toronto, we were shocked at the low quality of the plane and service on our next flight from Toronto to Phoenix. I have never been on a dirtier, grungier plane.
Verified travelerFlew with Air CanadaYYZ-LAXAug 2024
Treat this like you’re flying on a greyhound bus. Bring food. Bring a pillow. Bring entertainment. Know that you will be uncomfortable and the airline won’t care.
F.Flew with United AirlinesYYZ-DENAug 2024
Make sure to check the airline delay flights rate and if you have important commitments choose another airline.
AndrewFlew with Porter AirlinesYYZ-SFOJul 2024
I've flown many discount airlines and I think this is the first I will not use again.
JoshuaFlew with Air CanadaYYZ-DENApr 2024
Toronto's customs was one of the faster experiences I've had. They opened four more lanes to expedite the process when the lane got too long, to ensure we would all get through within around 15 minutes. The public transportation within the city is also top notch, in my opinion.
Verified travelerFlew with Air CanadaYYZ-TPAApr 2024
Be at the airport at least three hours in advance and have your meal before boarding. I am short so if a passenger hadn’t helped me, I would not have reached the overhead bin.
Verified travelerFlew with Air CanadaYYZ-LGAMar 2024
Air Canada has helpful staff; the process is easy and no confusion; and Toronto airport is far more organized I have to say in going through security and customs!
Verified travelerFlew with United AirlinesYYZ-IAHMar 2024
Be sure to be aware of what the limits are for taking liquid or cream personal care items.
Verified travelerFlew with Porter AirlinesYTZ-EWRApr 2024
Definitely to fly with Porter, way better than tight spaced and expensive and delays of air canada.
Verified travelerFlew with United AirlinesYYZ-MSPApr 2024
Don’t expect much from the Toronto staff. Maybe they’re poorly trained, maybe they don’t care. The airport itself is badly maintained with insufficient toilets, waiting areas with taped up chairs, and is dirty everywhere. Compared to Dublin and Minneapolis it’s like going to a third world country. Avoid it if at all possible especially if you require assistance due to age or injury.
Verified travelerFlew with United AirlinesYYZ-ORDMar 2024
Carry-on baggage sizing for United US bound flights appears to be much smaller than for Canadian flights, which forced me to check my bag at the last minute. So check online ahead of time

The departure time was very convenient with the United.
GaryFlew with Air New ZealandYYZ-LAXDec 2023
Get instructions on how to find your connecting flight terminal and gate in LAX. There are no information boards or information desks. We asked a lady in a gift shop, then it was a series of tunnels and stairs that were not well sign posted at all.
Verified travelerFlew with Air CanadaYYZ-TPAJan 2024
Don’t do it unless you have to. I fly a lot and can only fly mid class & every airline cuts corners in exchange for corporate profits. Flying used to be reasonable in comfort. No more.

FAQs - booking United States flights

  • What official paperwork do I need in order to fly from Toronto to the United States?

Canadian citizens flying into the United States must show a valid passport that remains valid during the duration of their stay in America. Canadian citizens can also fly into the United States using a NEXUS card. However, if the flight has not been pre-cleared by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in Canada, then those entering with a NEXUS card cannot use entry kiosks and must use the regular inspection lanes.

  • Can I find a cheap ticket from Toronto to all three airports in New York City?

Yes. You can find affordably priced tickets from Toronto to JFK, LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and the Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). However, the cheapest tickets tend to be direct flights that depart from the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) and land at Newark (EWR).

  • Can I catch a direct flight from Toronto to Buffalo, just across Lake Ontario?

Oddly enough, it is very difficult to find a direct flight from Toronto to Buffalo. However, United, Air Canada, and Porter Airlines offer flights with one stop, usually in Newark, Washington DC, Chicago, or Boston.

  • When I fly from Toronto to Washington DC, can I book a ticket that lands at any of the three DC airports?

Yes. You can even find direct flights that fly into Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA), or Baltimore Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport (BWI). The cheapest tickets are often on Air Canada flights that fly directly into Dulles (IAD).

Top tips for finding cheap flights to the United States

  • Most flights from Toronto to the United States depart from the Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), Toronto's primary airport. However, you can find many cheap tickets to the United States departing from three other airports. The Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ), the Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF), and the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport (YHM) are often cheap origin airports for a trip from Toronto to the United States.
  • When you want to fly from Toronto across the Great Lakes to Minneapolis (MSP), you can find a number of direct flights on airlines such as Air Canada or United. You can also find incredibly cheap flights from the John C Munro Hamilton International Airport (YHM) to the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) with one stop in Las Vegas.
  • While you can find many cheap flights from Toronto to Los Angeles that are direct and non-stop, the cheapest flights often entail one stop in Vancouver. These flights generally require a self-transfer when you change from Flair Airlines to Spirit Airlines at the Vancouver International Airport (YVR).
  • Cheap airline tickets booked through KAYAK that fly from Toronto to Dallas have the option of landing at either the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) or the Dallas Love Field Airport (DAL). Though you can find tickets to both Dallas airports, tickets to Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) tend to be significantly cheaper.
  • For those who want to fly from Toronto to Florida in order to visit Disney World, you can find many cheap flights to the Orlando International Airport (MCO). Air Transat, Air Canada, and WestJet offer incredibly inexpensive direct flights. Delta and United offer cheap flights that have one stop, often in Detroit, New York, or Washington DC.

It was amazing although they did bump us up to the front which gave us more leg room and a meal. The service was great! The staff were friendly. :)

Overall very good... staff were friendly and helpful. boarding was good for the most part, but a little hard to get our carry-on bags on there.... I think people should be directed to keep their coats and small bags with them until all the carry-ons are loaded, and then, if there is space, they can put their small bags and coats up top.. makes it much easier to put baggage up. i loved the internet feature, but the entertainment was not there unless you have your own Netflix or similar platform. My chair did not recline, which was very annoying, and the arms won't go up near the isle, which makes it tough to get in and out of the seat.

Staff were excellant. Only snacks served. Some turbulence so we were offered Free beer or wine.

The staff is always great. Just the fact that our flight was the only one delayed from Halifax when all other carries were still flying. It happen a year ago out of Toronto as well. All others were flying but our flight got cancelled 1 hr before the time of departure.

The only issue had when i mentioned about comfort was the man beside me was on the larger side and took about 1/3 of my seat where i was pressed against the wall/window of the plane for the trip.

The check-in staff, boarding staff, and flight crew were all very friendly. Really miss the Porter lounge in Ottawa.

Thanks for giving a beer to everyone in the seat infront of me and then telling me that I can’t have one because they are going to land. I guess I need to pay for a seat and then pick one in the very front of the plane

The flight was delayed by more than one hour. The terminal was consequently overcrowded and hot. We lost our car reservation and hit rush hour traffic in Boston, which added two hours stuck in traffic to our trip.

Awesome, the whole way through. Thank you, this is the new Canadian Airline benchmark.

We were given a complimentary seat upgrade which was so unexpected but so lovely!

Plane temperature was comfortable (not to hot) when boarding and waiting for takeoff.

Michael, our FA was very attentive, even finding me a chocolate brownie from economy class when the dessert selections were all dairy based. ( intolerant, not allergic so don’t usually need to order dairy free)

We tried to upgrade to economy premium but were told this was not possible as we had booked through United Airlines (and Air Canada was operating the flight). This seemed silly given there was ample space in economy premium. Additionally, we had to wait almost 1.5 hours upon arrival to taxi to the gate. Otherwise, the crew were very pleasant and passengers were friendly.

It was my first time with United Airlines and I would say it was very good experience and best of all the flights were on time. Will definitely fly with United Airlines next time.

headphone jack didnt work for the first flight and not much variety

Plane 3 hours late. Missed connection. No help from gate staff. App horrible. Lost connection repeatedly. No service desk. Finally got help from young girl driving cart.

Not as good as expected Air Can needs to improve totally rated on internet as worst

The flight was delayed, it took longer than anticipated because of weather, and they broke my luggage.

Everything was good. Flight was on time, luggage pickup was quick. The staff were great. Could not ask for anything more.

lots of delays the crew were unclear about where to pick up my carry-on, which they took from me to check in on the plane.

Internet on both flights was sketchy. Thus in flight entertainment was non- existent on MN - Balrimote leg.

We never had an experience they canceled the flight and they did not offer us an alternative flight. I had to book one on my own expense. They offered us food voucher and we could not use them at the airport it kept saying not attached to an existing flight. The people at the counter were rude and cold and they did not care about our situation

It took 30 minutes to check in with the Westjet rep. They didn’t have enough seats and she needed to make a call… I am always “randomly” selected to be checked at security. Their “randomly “ selection system may need some updating. They treat people like criminals. It is not appropriate behavior.

Found the seats very crowded—too close together ! And waited a long time for our luggage All staff at both ends were excellent!!!

Flight cancelled and Kayak switched our return flight to a red eye. Ridiculous.

Will never book through you again. Very disappointed in the notices and action taken or provided when planes are rescheduled, enough to cause missed connections

Lost my luggage. Filed a report and there is no response. Received a phone call from another airline that said they had the bag and they did not know what to do with it

Very good over all , would have been nice to have entertainment on the flight

Absolutely the worst airline I have ever taken. They lost my baggage and told me my bag tags had been cancelled. When my bags arrived days later I had to pick them up at 3:15 am. My return flight was delayed another 6 hours and they broke my bag. Westjet does nothing to try and make it a better customer experience and all the customers services representatives I spoke with were useless and incompetent. Never flying westjet again.

Easy self checkin and baggage drop. No in seat entertainment, but wifi and app worked well

Overall good experience. The flight from Toronto to Denver does not have entertainment - movies to watch.

Ensure prepaid food arrangements are appropriately understood by flight crew of who purchased and who did not

All was fine. Weather was a bit stormy, but nothing kayak can do about that! 😊

I paid for a comfort class seat and was seated in economy.

My plane was cancelled and had to be rebook for the evening was not happy.

The flight was cancelled and we had to rebook on Porter to make our cruise the next day. Air Canada has not compensated. We won’t be flying with them again. This is the second time this has happened. Also the return flight was delayed 2 hours who knows why.

Separated me and my wife and wife’s sister in far apart different seats even though I booked them all together. Just scams after scams to make us pay more. Worst airline

If you want your flight to get delayed constantly for 13+ hours and given a 10 dollar food voucher the. I would say take air canada. Worst experience ever.

My flight was cancelled and I was left to figure out where to find a hotel, something to eat and how to get a new flight at 11:30pm. Wasted a day. Thanks, Air Canada!

flight was delayed 6 hours for weather, then cancelled because of the crash in toronto, but none of the links to cancel or rebook my flights are working

Leg room was terrible and seats very narrow. Flight was also delayed.

The worst airline experience that I ever had in my life. The fare was cheap but boy do you pay for it when it comes to baggages, carry-ons, food on board and lack of available staff at check-in. Almost every other passenger on my flight had the same complaints and experience. We all bonded discussing our displeasure. My husband and I will definitely not be traveling with Flair Airlines. We'll take anyone else.

The most uncomfortable plane I ever fly on. The seats won't even recline a little. For a 5 hrs flight at night and tired it felt like torture

Seats in 1 res are dispersed all over the plane, even child was across

Personally, I will not use this fight again. The service is poor, you have to buy even water. They don't provide anything even sneak, you have to buy. They said Personally items for 7 kg. Then they use some measurements, if you have 7kg and if it's not getting inside of their measurements, you have to pay 80$ this is robbery. I will prefer other flight then this. I am désappointement taking this airplane.

It’s a shameful company. It ask as to go to counter to take the boarding pass, they simply send it by email, just to check the bags’ size in a smaller than normal template. DONT USE FLAIR! It will be more expensive than normal airlines at the end.

flight was okay, no wifi, no free drinks but worst of all they lost my son's bike for four days. Customer service was nonexistent - call a number that leaves you on perpetual hold, there's no baggage folks in the baggage claims area (in vancouver). we went up to international and nobody was at ticketing, went to domestic and they had us fill out a form. they could not tell us where the bag was. Anyway, highly recommend you drop an airtag for anything that's worth more than $500. My son's bike costs a lot more than that to replace; I was on pins and needles for four days.

The crew of this flight, specially the flight attendant in the front were the sweetest I’ve had in all my life, I genuinely hope they get a race or sum cuz of their efforts. It was just quite unsettling that the flight took so long to departure. It was supposed to leave at 10:35pm and we ended up taking off at 11:22pm…👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

It’s bare bones but was on time so can’t complain.

Of all the countries I've flown to and airlines from around the world, I have never had such a dismissive an arrogant employee during boarding. After waiting in line for 20 minutes to board, I was sent to a second line for Passport verification. Natalie from Flair, repeatedly tried to scan my passport which didn't work for some reason but was too lazy to input my information manually. Bar code scanners aren't 100% reliable as we all know. She asked me my birthdate 3 times, made me wait to be the last person aboard and then smugly threatened me that my only bag could be charged for (same backpack I used as on my arrival as carry on). Natalie working in Ft. Lauderdale and the was the epitome of lobotomized tiktok brain with the charm of junk mail.
