Istanbul Airport (IST) Flights & Flight Status
Istanbul Airport: Expert advice and recommendations
Expert travel writer Jenna Scatena shares all you need to know before booking a flight to or from Istanbul Airport.Istanbul Airport (IST) is the main gateway to Istanbul and the larger of the two airports servicing the city. It’s a relatively new establishment, having only been opened in 2018, but it has rapidly become one of the busiest airports in the world, catering to millions of passengers and with flights to over 350 destinations. Here’s everything you need to know about flying into Istanbul Airport.
Istanbul Airport layout
Istanbul Airport has only one terminal building, which is quite different to most other large international airports you’ve probably visited. However, the terminal is quite impressive and well organized, with dedicated areas for both international and domestic arrivals and departures over multiple levels.
Despite it catering for so many passengers every day, most people agree that it’s pretty efficient, especially with everything under one roof. If you’re unlucky to arrive at a busy time, there can be lengthy waits at the limited security checkpoints before and after passport control. I don’t find this unusual compared with most other major international transport hubs across Asia, though.
The place is huge. Despite it being all in one terminal, don’t underestimate the time it might take you to simply walk from check-in to your gate. I’d definitely recommend wearing comfortable shoes.
Getting to and from Istanbul Airport by public transport
Istanbul Airport is located on the European side of the city. While it does sit at an inconvenient 40 kilometres from the city centre, it’s well-connected by public transport, easing some of the pain of long-haul travel.
The much-anticipated metro link to the airport officially opened in 2023. The M11 Gayrettepe – Istanbul Airport Metro Line operates from 6 am through midnight each day, with consistent trains coming and going every 5 minutes or so. From Gayrettepe, it’s easy to transfer to other lines to get in and out of the city centre.
There’s also the Havaist airport shuttles, which connect the airport to multiple points in the city, including central locations like Taksim Square, Sultanahmet, and Levent. These shuttles run regularly, offering a comfortable ride at an affordable price. I particularly recommend them if you have heavy luggage and prefer not to be changing metro lines and crammed in with peak-time commuters.
If public transport isn’t your thing, taxis and ridesharing services are readily available outside the terminal as well, providing door-to-door convenience, which may be especially useful for those travelling in larger groups. Regardless of the transport option chosen, I’ve found getting to and from Istanbul Airport to be a relatively hassle-free experience.
Security and passport control
The security and passport control at Istanbul Airport is comparable to most other large international airports. Security checkpoints scan all departing and transit passengers as well as their luggage, with strict rules on prohibited items in line with international law.
You’ll need to pack any liquids, gels and aerosols in carry-on luggage with a capacity of up to 100 millilitres each. I tend to carry all of my liquids in a clear bag so it’s easy to remove for inspection. All metal items including belts, jackets and electronics need to be placed in plastic trays when they pass through the scanners.
For foreign passport holders, there’s no way of fast-tracking entry or exit through passport control. Only Turkish passengers can use the e-passport points to avoid queues. If you happen to arrive at a particularly busy time, be prepared to have to wait for around 45 minutes to an hour.
Visa requirements for Turkey differ depending on nationality. Canadian passport holders, as well those with US and UK passports, don’t require a visa for a short stay of up to 90 days. Other nationals may have to apply for and obtain an e-visa prior to arriving, but this is pretty simple for the most part.
The lowdown on lounges
Istanbul Airport has done well with its lounges. The main options include the iGA International Lounge and the iGA Domestic Lounge, but airline-affiliated lounges like the SkyTeam Lounge and Turkish Airlines Lounge are also available.
My preference is the Turkish Airlines Business Lounge on the international departures floor. It’s available to business class passengers on Turkish Airlines or Star Alliance airlines. It has basically everything you could need before your flight, including private suite rooms, showers, a playground for the kids, an open buffet and free Wi-Fi.
Otherwise, those with Priority Pass can take advantage of the iGA Lounges. It’s previously been voted amongst the world’s top airport lounge brands and has a bit of everything that you’ll need, including snacks, beverages, plenty of comfortable seating, Wi-Fi, showers and an outdoor terrace. You can also purchase one-off entry to these lounges, if you happen to have some extra time.
Take a nap in the airport
If you find yourself in between flights and need some shut-eye, there are several places to take a nap in the airport—a pleasant surprise! The most obvious choice is to head for the airport hotel, YOTEL. It’s the largest airport hotel in Europe, boasting 450 rooms that are available for either just a few hours or a full overnight stay.
Sometimes you want something a bit more convenient for just a quick nap. This is where the iGA Sleepods get my vote. They offer a private sleeping capsule for a reasonable hourly rate, with pillows and blankets available at additional cost. You can jump in for a quick nap in between flights without the hassle of checking into a hotel.
Otherwise, you can also find Napzone areas throughout the airport with reclining chairs amongst minimal noise and with charging points.
Free Wi-Fi at Istanbul airport
Connecting to free Wi-Fi at Istanbul Airport is straightforward, which can be handy if you want to quickly connect and let someone know you’ve landed. However, it’s a bit limited, as travellers get just one hour of free Wi-Fi access per check-in.
Simply locate the wireless internet kiosks provided by Türk Telekom throughout the terminal, and you can use either a Turkish mobile number or your passport to register for the free internet. If you need a stronger connection, you can head to one of the information desks and pay for upgraded Wi-Fi access, or go to one of the lounges if you need to get some work done.
Pet-friendly travel
Travelling can certainly be a bit more stressful if you’re bringing along your furry friend for the ride. Istanbul Airport does a good job of making it comfortable and convenient, though. Pet relief areas are located before and after security on both the departures floors, where your pet can stretch their legs and relieve themselves in a safe environment.
You can also access pet friendly lounges, where you can relax in between flights with your four-legged friends too. Be sure to check with airport staff and your airline regarding their specific pet policies, as different airlines may have unique preparations and requirements for pets both prior to take-off and onboard the plane.
Culinary tour of Istanbul Airport
Istanbul Airport provides an incredible opportunity to experience the diverse flavours of Turkish cuisine without even leaving the terminal. The airport houses one of the most impressive arrays of dining options in the world, ranging from gourmet restaurants to quick-service outlets and cozy cafés.
Simit Sarayi is a great spot for Turkish street food, or sit down at a table for a more substantial meal at Cuisine Anatolia. Try the classic doner kebab or indulge in a rich, creamy bowl of manti (Turkish dumplings) for a taste of authentic Turkish cuisine.
For a caffeine fix, I recommend skipping Starbucks and savouring a cup of Turkish coffee paired with a slice of kunefe, a delicious cheese-filled pastry soaked in syrup at Çay Saati. The retail options are equally extensive, with a mix of high-end luxury boutiques, duty-free stores, and shops offering artisanal products. Don’t forget to pick up the obligatory Turkish Delights and baklava from Old Bazaar stores to take home for your friends and family.
